DESCRIPTION This study-unit adopts a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the roles and significance of museums in contemporary societies. Employing insights from sociology, anthropology, cultural studies and museum studies, the study-unit examines the complexity of the museum from cultural, political, historical and representational perspectives.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:

- Enable participants to consider museums and heritage sites as spaces for critical engagement.
- Enable participants to understand the politics of culture.
- Enable participants to see parallels between the museum and curriculum, as sites of struggle and critical engagement.
- Regard the construction of public memory in the museum as a contested terrain.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Examine how people’s attitudes, opinions, beliefs and perspectives are marked by asymmetries of power, shape society, social relations and the dynamics that unfold within private and public spaces.
- Familiarise him/herself with concepts concerning education culture and power.
- Critically understand aspects of sociology and cultural studies that impinge on issues arising from museums.
- Analyse issues of exclusion and selection in museums.
- Understand issues of representation in museum displays.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Use terminology concerning cultural politics.
- Relate artefacts to contemporary concerns.
- Engage critically with material, displays and happenings occurring within and outside museums.
- Think in an interdisciplinary way.
- Articulate higher-order thinking.
- Merge theoretical insights and ractical knowledge.
