This course provides an advanced level of education, training and research if you are a graduate in Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental Surgery and any other area of study deemed relevant by the Board of Studies. The course enables you to acquire advanced knowledge and research skills that could be employed in the academic and clinical setting. You will be required to find a local supervisor and submit a research proposal upon applying in order for the application to be referred for consideration. This course, mainly Research, will allow you to specialize in your chosen area of studies. The core subjects are Research Methods, Statistics and Research Practicals. The taught study-units will introduce you to Research Methods with essentials of Health information, epidemiology, qualitative research methods and ethical concerns in Research. You will also be provided with basic knowledge and skills for statistical input in Health Research.

Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

the degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, or
the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery, or
the degree of Master of Dental Surgery, or
the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) with at least Second Class (Honours), or
the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Pharmaceutical Science) with a classification of Second Class Honours or better, or
the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the Faculty of Science, with at least Second Class (Honours), or
at least a Second Class (Honours) degree in a discipline related to health science, or
a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in (a) to (f) above.

Applicants whose first degree was obtained more than 10 years previous to registration for the Course may also be admitted provided that they produce sufficient proof of their competence to follow the Course with profit. The Board may, at its discretion, require such applicants to follow a preparatory programme.

*Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 1 of academic year 2026-27 and continue up to the end of the Summer Semester of academic year 2026-27.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science - M.Sc. – under the auspices of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

The following are some of the skills and knowledge that you will bring to the research field in Pathology if you are a successful graduate of the course:

The capacity to explain the basic principles of research ethics including consent and respect for autonomy.
The ability to discuss the basic concepts of health informatics and local health infrastructure.
Identify and select appropriate source material including data from primary sources.
The ability to demonstrate a critical understanding of research methods and your chosen area of study.
Utilise the appropriate significance tests and statistical software.
Analyse the distribution of data and confidence intervals.

This course is also intended if you work with pharmaceutical companies, hospital laboratories, health ministry and ministry for social policy.

Potential to continue studies at Ph.D. level at University is also available if you are a successful graduate.
