Applicants must be in possession of:

  1. the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) from the Faculty of Health Sciences in an area of study which should be directly related to the area in which the research is to be carried out or
  2. a Bachelor's degree obtained with at least a Second Class (Honours) in a discipline deemed by the Board as being closely related to the area of study in which the research is to be carried out or
  3. a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in (a) and (b).

During the first year of the Course, students may be required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for work which may bring them in contact with the clinical environment. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

The dissertation will describe your research and present results and conclusions in a scholarly manner. The dissertation must be based on work of a sufficiently advanced nature performed by the student during the course, and should produce results that are publishable in the mainstream scientific literature. The work should demonstrate that through the project, you have gained experience in Nutrition and/or Dietetics and/or the Food Science research area and are able to set up a research problem, plan experiments and /or data collection methodology, present and analyse data appropriately and draw logical conclusions from the results obtained.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 1 of academic year 2024-25 (October 2024) and continue up to the end of Semester 1 of academic year 2025-26 (January 2026).

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify, analyse, evaluate and synthesize relevant evidence-based published material from diverse sources and settings, including systematic reviews.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the main methodologies and theories pertaining to your selected subject area,
  • Describe and critically review existing models as well as develop and employ new models, frameworks or recommendations that can contribute to your findings and the interpretation of your chosen subject area.
  • Critically assess the application of innovative technologies within the settings of your research, these could include the community, clinical settings, public health settings or the food industry.
