The dissertation will describe your research and present results and conclusions in a scholarly manner. The dissertation must be based on work of a sufficiently advanced nature performed by the student during the course, and should produce results that are publishable in the mainstream scientific literature. The work should demonstrate that through the project, you have gained experience in Nutrition and/or Dietetics and/or the Food Science research area and are able to set up a research problem, plan experiments and /or data collection methodology, present and analyse data appropriately and draw logical conclusions from the results obtained.

Applicants must be in possession of:

the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) from the Faculty of Health Sciences in an area of study which should be directly related to the area in which the research is to be carried out or
a Bachelor's degree obtained with at least a Second Class (Honours) in a discipline deemed by the Board as being closely related to the area of study in which the research is to be carried out or
a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in (a) and (b).

During the first year of the Course, students may be required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for work which may bring them in contact with the clinical environment. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

Identify, analyse, evaluate and synthesise relevant evidence-based published material from diverse sources and settings;
Describe and critically review existing frameworks, policies or recommendations and where appropriate develop and employ new approaches that can contribute to the findings and the interpretation of the chosen subject area;
Demonstrate understanding and application of the main methodologies and theories pertinent to the selected subject area;
Critically assess and utilise appropriate technologies or tools within the settings of the research, which could include community, clinical, public health or food industry contexts;
Communicate research findings effectively to the scientific community, particularly those within the food science, nutrition and / or dietetics fields;
Translate the acquired research skills to professional practice, policy development and / or further study at doctoral level.
