Psychology

Applicants wishing to join the part-time mode must submit their application as full-time, and then include a note in the comments box of the application form, denoting their preference to be considered for the part-time option. Such requests will be considered by the Board of the Faculty.

The programme of study offers a range of study-units central to the study of Psychology. The overall objective is to provide you with a high-calibre, relevant and culturally sensitive education in the major areas of Psychology to become well-versed in the scientific understanding of human behaviour, emotions, relationships and mental health.

Sociology

In the undergraduate course in Sociology, we will provide you with an academic lens on the study of human behaviour and its causal and contingent relationship with social life in its versatile facets. By studying sociology, you will become knowledgeable on the cohesive and important structures of society and its organisations. You will have a heightened and refined awareness on topics ranging from economic and environmental sociology, to sociology of sport, law and religion. We will also encourage you to participate in an Erasmus+ mobility programme for a multicultural and diverse academic journey.

Psychology

You will need to complete 80 ECTS assigned to various study-units in the following core areas: Major Paradigms in Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Research Methods, Biological Psychology, Social Psychology, Psychopathology and Cognitive Psychology.

In your final year of studies, you will have the opportunity to consolidate and synthesise these core areas by means of synoptic study-units. They would be able to choose elective study-units from various applied areas such as Organisational Psychology, Health Psychology, Forensic Psychology and Neuropsychology, amongst others.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

Sociology

An Advanced Level pass in any of the following subjects: Sociology, Philosophy, Geography, Economics, History, Home Economics and Human Ecology, Information Technology, Marketing, Religious Knowledge, Theatre and Performance.

Psychology

Applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' are required to sit for an interview, held on a date which will be announced in due course.

Applicants may also be required to submit a Learning Portfolio. Further information about the Portfolio will be forwarded to applicants.

Upon successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

Compare and contrast major theoretical and therapeutic paradigms in the field;
Appraise current topics in psychology from different perspectives, including diverse disciplines within the field itself;
Engage with current theoretical issues and research findings in psychology within a bio-psycho-social perspective, attending to evidence-based practice.

Sociology

Upon successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

Engage and contribute to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary discussion through your heightened capacity for critical thought and awareness of the integration of sociological concepts in a broad range of areas.
Use methodological research skills to conduct and write academic essays related to the subject matter.
Have a deep understanding of sociological concepts, theories and criticisms in its multifaceted areas.
Use your sociological perspective and your refined sense for critical thought and awareness by applying them to contemporary issues, both locally and internationally.
Interpret, analyse and create sociological hypotheses through the application of sociological theories.

Psychology

Identify how different branches of psychology contribute to the understanding of different issues (e.g. societal issues, stress, mental health and wellbeing);
Recognise how psychology, as a scientific discipline, constructs knowledge on the basis of research evidence;
Recognise the philosophical underpinnings pertaining to qualitative and quantitative methodologies;
Apply knowledge and understanding to psychology to areas such as groups, organisations, health and learning, amongst others;
Apply knowledge and understanding of psychology to address familiar and unfamiliar problems;
Formulate a critical opinion that is based on current literature in psychology;
Engage in a critical debate with their peers on the topics presented;
Work in a team in order to achieve a common goal and
Present current topics in psychology and discuss these with their peers.

Psychology

As a holder of this degree, despite the programme not having offered the professional training in psychology, will offer your opportunities for employment in areas that involve human interaction or community services. Some areas include human service agencies and personnel management. Your background in psychology will be the foundation for transferrable skills in a variety of work settings, while also providing a platform for further training and study at postgraduate level. Transferring to the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology can serve as a stepping stone for further studies that paves the way for Masters programmes offered by the University of Malta, such as Master of Arts in Social Work, Master in Youth and Community Service, Master of Psychology in Clinical/Counselling/Educational, and many more.

Sociology

As a graduate in this programme of study you will have career opportunities, both locally and internationally, as a policy officer, advice worker, community development worker, youth worker, police officer, teacher, social researcher, human resources officer, journalist and public relations officer.
