DESCRIPTION Students will be given a grounding in the legal provisions relevant to the area of study, with the lecturer adopting a practical, experience-based pedagogical style. Students will be able to appreciate the various aspects of commercial law as it impacts on their functions in management. In that this is a background-level study-unit, students are given an insight into the sources of commercial law and an overview of the basic tenets, including the limits of competition between traders, commercial obligations, credit instruments and bankruptcy.

Study-Unit Aims

To give students an understanding of the commercial legal issues that may arise in a business environment and to provide them with the necessary insight to identify and tackle these issues.

Learning Outcomes

Students successfully completing this course should, among other things, be able to:

- Identify the different sources of Commercial Law;
- Interpret and analyse relevant case law and legislation;
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of the basic tenets of Commercial Law; and
- Attain an appreciation of the role which Commercial Law plays in the sphere of business.

Skills

Students successfully completing this course should, among other things, be able to:

- Be in position to follow related study-units or more specialized study-units in the field;
- Allow the knowledge obtained through this study-unit to influence decision-making processes at work to avoid legal complications; and
- Provide the necessary assistance and support to legal professionals in tackling legal issues that may arise in the operation and management of a business.

- The Commercial Code (Chapter 13 of the Laws of Malta) and other relevant legislation as indicated by the lecturer throughout the study-unit;
- Case Law and other relevant material as indicated and provided by the lecturer throughout the study-unit.
