ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Institute of Aerospace Technologies

DESCRIPTION This course will introduce you to the technology that underlies computers and communication networks, and the understanding of how computers operate; how users interact with computers; how computers store data; how computers communicate with other computers; the building blocks of communications networks; the Internet, and TCP/IP communications protocols and applications.

Study-unit Aims:

This is a core course designed to provide you with essential working knowledge about the operation of computers, data networks, and the Internet and apply the understanding of topics discussed in this course to the protection and security of these technology components.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon course completion, students will be able to:

1. Explain the function of the components of a computer data network, including wirebased and wireless networks;
2. Summarize the basic operation of the TCP/IP protocol stack;
3. Identify the major functions and types of operating systems;
4. Describe the operation of popular Internet applications (e.g., file transfer, peer-to-peer networking, World Wide Web);
5. Explain the operation of several real-time Internet applications (e.g., Voice over IP, streaming audio and video);
6. Summarize the operation of a TCP/IP network (e.g., control protocols, routing, DNS).
