DESCRIPTION The Directed Study in Arabic Studies is designed for students seeking to deepen their understanding of specific areas within Arabic studies through guided research or analysis tasks under supervision. This study-unit addresses challenges particular to Arabic studies and more generic issues that undergraduate students of Arabic generally face.

This study unit encourages students engaged in researching the field of Arabic studies to refine their academic skills through presentations, academic discussions, and scholarly writing and also aims to address the primary challenges encountered during research about the Arab world. Through a student-centred approach, the study-unit helps students understand the diverse research methodologies, particularly those that are generally employed in specialised fields of Arabic studies such as Arabic literature, Arabic translation, Arabic dialectology, and Arabic (socio-)linguistics.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To explore areas within Arabic studies through guided research or analysis tasks under supervision.
- To tackle both specific challenges in Arabic studies and generic issues commonly faced by undergraduate students of Arabic.
- To refine academic skills, including participation in academic discussions and scholarly writing.
- To help students navigate challenges encountered during research about the Arab world.
- To familiarise students with diverse research methodologies commonly employed in specialised fields of Arabic studies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Critically evaluate primary and secondary sources and their significance within various areas of Arabic studies;
- Demonstrate a complex knowledge of critical discourses and how they overlap and inform our understanding of Arabic language and literature;
- Develop rational and coherent arguments.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Interpret data;
- Present one's work clearly and effectively;
- Critically discuss academic articles.

There is no fixed reading list. The texts/readings depend on the theme/topic chosen by the student.
