| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit presents selections, in Arabic, from classical Arabic literature. This includes excerpts from pre-Islamic poetry, the Qur’ān, the Hadīt, Akhbār literature, and the short story, thus covering both classical poetry and prose. Apart from exposing students to the rich Arabic classical literary tradition, this study-unit consolidates the linguistic elements covered in the language study-units. Moreover, the study-unit offers insights into a number of cultural features characterizing Arabic civilization. Study-unit Aims: 1. To introduce students to classical Arabic literature; 2. To train students to read and translate classical literary texts; 3. To consolidate Arabic listening and reading competences; 4. To familiarize students with classical Arabic literature in the original language. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will: 1. become familiar with a selection of major classical Arabic literary works; 2. be able to read, comprehend and translate classical Arabic texts; 3. be able to summarize orally and in writing the excerpts covered; 4. be able to distinguish between different literary genres; 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. read, translate and appreciate classical Arabic literary texts; 2. strengthen his/her Arabic grammar; 3. analyse various philological aspects relating to such texts. 4. apply the language skills learned in this study-unit to other study-units related to the Arabic language.
