DESCRIPTION | The student is given the opportunity to propose the topic of this directed study. Once the topic has been approved by the coordinating lecturer, the student develops the chosen theme with particular reference to the written and oral sources indicated by the coordinating lecturer. Other lecturer/s might co-supervise the study. The directed study should treat themes in Arab Civilization: thoughts and ideas. Study-unit Aims: i. To acquire knowledge about the chosen area of study; ii. To expose the student to various bibliographical sources about the chosen theme; iii. To train the student in the preparation of long essays in particular, and academic research in general. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: i. demonstrate a basic knowledge of the areas of study outlined in section C6 above. This will take the form of a class presentation, an oral and a long essay; ii. gather, process and evaluate critically information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: i. analyze and interpret basic themes characterizing Arab civilization; ii. synthesize the chosen theme; iii. resort to the proper research skills in the investigation of specific topics concerning Arab civilization. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: The choice of the bibliography and other research sources depends on the theme chosen by the student and approved by the coordinating lecturer. |
