DESCRIPTION In the third year of the BA (Hons) degree in Arabic Studies, students will write and submit for examination a dissertation of 7,000-9,000 words, exclusive of notes, bibliography, and appendices. Students must discuss the topic of their dissertation with the relevant tutor prior to registration. The chosen topic must be connected with the broad field of Arabic Studies.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at:
- deepening the student’s knowledge and skills acquired during the course of studies;
- developing creative and critical thinking skills;
- practising the critical assessment of research literature;
- improving the student’s research methods and their application;
- strengthening the student’s ability to read academic texts in Arabic.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- examine research literature more critically;
- show the ability to work academically;
- quote and refer to research literature correctly;
- demonstrate an increased understanding of academic literature in Arabic.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- summarise and assess key points of secondary texts related to Arabic studies;
- discuss a topic related to Arabic studies in a more differentiated way;
- demonstrate improved reading, writing and speaking skills in Arabic;
- search for, analyse and evaluate information;
- show developed critical and creative thinking skills.
- demonstrate improved argumentation skills.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

Students will draw up a bibliography relevant to their chosen topic in consultation with their supervisor.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
