DESCRIPTION This study-unit is intended as an introduction to Palaeochristian and Byzantine archaeology. The main focus is Italy and the Western Mediterranean with an emphasis on the burial complexes(catacombs) and early churches of Rome, Sicily and North Africa.

Study-unit Aims

1. To provide students with an overview of the principal cultural manifestations of the Palaeochristian and Byzantine period in Italy and the Western Mediterranean more generally until the seventh century AD.
2. To ground the historical overview of the period in the epigraphic and archaeological sources.
3. To discuss the changing cultural, political, artistic and architectural landscapes for the Palaeochristian and the Byzantine periods.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Recognize the main cultural manifestations of the Palaeochristian and Byzantine period;
2. Gain a sound working knowledge on the archaeological remains and monuments pertaining to the period under review;
3. Analyse and compare cultural, architectural, and artistic cross-cultural currents influencing the Palaeochristian and the Byzantine periods until the seventh century AD.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Develop a better understanding of the Later Roman Empire;
2. Obtain a practical working experience on the Palaeochristian and Byzantine fields of study;
3. Identify future research topics.
