DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is suitable for people who have no prior knowledge of the Chinese language. It is designed for beginners to gain a basic knowledge and confidence in using Chinese. The Chinese sentence structure, grammar and basic Chinese characters will be introduced in the course. Pinyin as a pronunciation tool will be taught during the class. Basic vocabulary and conversations frequently encountered in everyday life will also be provided through typical everyday scenarios. Learners will also acquire essential skills in using Chinese and they will be ready to go on to the next level. Study-unit Aims 1. to learn how to communicate within a limited range of daily life situations. 2. to know 200 commonly used Chinese characters and about 300 words 3. to learn the basic Chinese sentence structure and grammar 4. to understand simple Chinese etiquette and customs related to the course content as well. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. master Pinyin, the Mandarin phonetic system 2. recognise and write up to 200 Chinese characters 3. develop a vocabulary of 300 words and frequently used phrases 4. master the basic Chinese sentence structure and grammar 5. understand simple Chinese etiquette and customs related to the course content. 2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. perform basic greetings and short conversations 2. write simple sentences 3. better understand basic Chinese cultural concepts.
