| DESCRIPTION | By the end of the last semester of the B.A. (Hons) course in Oriental Studies (Chinese), every Honours student is expected to have written, and submitted for examination, a dissertation of 10000-12000 words, exclusive of notes, bibliography, and appendices. Students must discuss the topic of their dissertation with the relevant tutor prior to registration. The chosen topic must be connected with the broad field of Chinese/Asian Studies. Alternatively, students can choose to work on a capstone project related to Chinese studies. Projects would consist of approximately 15-20 recorded hours (the hours are used only to reflect the workload, but are not considered as part of the assessment; detailed recording methods will be discussed on a case-by-case basis) and would include a written reflective report of 7000-9000 words. Study-unit Aims: To train students to: 1. write a long research paper on a topic of their choice; 2. make critical use of the textual and archaeological sources, and formulate original interpretations on the basis of such evidence; 3. engage critically with the secondary literature and test scholarly hypotheses in light of the primary evidence; 4. deepen their knowledge and skills acquired during the course of studies; 5. improve their research methods and their application; 6. apply theoretical concepts to practical scenarios Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. discuss their chosen subject matter in detail; 2. analyze and interpret primary textual sources; 3. review and evaluate secondary literature pertinent to the chosen research question more critically; 4. integrate the subject-related knowledge into a real-world situation 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. write a sustained piece of work based on an analysis and interpretation of primary and secondary sources; 2. examine and criticize different types of sources; 3. demonstrate evidence of creative and critical thinking; 4. discuss a topic related to Chinese/Asian Studies in a more differentiated way; 5. apply acquired knowledge to organize a project and critically reflect on it. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: The supervisor will guide the students to draw up a solid bibliography relevant to their chosen topic. |

| ADDITIONAL NOTES | **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. | ||||||||
