DESCRIPTION This study-unit is an exercise in translation from Greek and Latin passages taken from literature, intended to consolidate the student’s knowledge of grammar, syntax and vocabulary, and to expose him to as many different genres in verse and prose as possible.

Study-unit Aims

To familiarise students who have already a grasp of Greek/Latin grammar and syntax with as wide as possible a range of Classical Greek/Roman literature, so that they would understand and appreciate the language in terms of its proper idiom, and be acquainted with differences in style as exhibited by a wide selection of Greek and Roman authors.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Analyze and translate unseen selections from Greek and Latin authors.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Provide an accurate and meaningful analysis and translation of any unseen passage of Classical Latin or Greek and further identify the author and period of literature by a clear recognition of the features of style and other characteristics of language which mark the composition of classical authors.
