DESCRIPTION This study-unit involves the close reading, analysis, and translation of sustained excerpts in the original Greek and Latin from Homer and Virgil, but also selections from the Hellenistic Greek epic of Apollonius of Rhodes and from later Roman epic poets such as Lucan and Statius. Each excerpt will be appropriately introduced in the light of its literary, mythological, and cultural contexts.

Study-Unit Aims:

This unit aims to provide students with:
- A first-hand experience of reading, discussing, and translating lengthy excerpts in the original languages from Homer and Virgil primarily, but also from other epic poets such as Apollonius, Lucan, and Statius;
- The opportunity to engage with epic in its wider cultural and historical frameworks;
- Opportunity to delve into the reading of ancient languages as represented in their best literatures.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Read, understand, and explain selected excerpts from classical epic in their original languages;
- Engage with classical epic in an active and academic manner;
- Discuss the poetic art of the main representatives of classical epic, relating also to their linguistic dimension.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Come to terms with various linguistic and thematic difficulties in the original texts of classical epic;
- Relate on the importance of language in the appreciation of the power of ancient epic.
