| DESCRIPTION | This unit will help the student delve into the mystery of myth creation and tradition, analyzing theoretical assessment, as well as literary evidence. A variety of topics discussed will including various definitions and interpretations of what is mythology. Furthermore this study-unit will analyze Greek mythology, by also discussing the common episodes which Greek mythology shares with the Hurrian, Babylonian and Hebrew myths. One cannot study Greek mythology without also consideringthe historical sagas, and the relationship of myth with religion, particularly with the concept of fertility. Study-Unit Aims: - To give students an overview of some of the major concepts underlying the mythology of Ancient Greece, from both the literary and theoretical viewpoints; - To explore common affinities between Greek and other ancient mythologies; - To describe inherent relationships between mythology and religion. Learning Outcomes: - To report on the chief aspects in the study of Ancient Greek mythology; - To demonstrate the major interlinkages between Greek and other ancient mythologies; - To explain the mutual influences between ancient mythology and religion.
