DESCRIPTION | The study-unit allows students to obtain a general introduction to academia and it imparts the necessary academic skills including: writing and presentation skills; information technology skills; and academic literature searching and referencing skills. Study-Unit Aims: The main aim of this study-unit is to prepare students for academic life, academic writing, presentation skills and the use of IT. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify where to locate pertinent information such as online resources; - Appraise techniques of note taking, reporting, academic writing and presentation skills; - Understand the importance of academic referencing and the APA method. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Locate resources within the University library including both physical and electronic material; - Employ techniques of note taking, reporting skills and group work; - Demonstrate competency in producing documents and presenting in class; - Demonstrate introductory level of competency in referencing using the APA referencing system.
