DESCRIPTION Study Unit Aims

The study-unit will enable students to understand the links between politics and social policy and to analyse social policies through the gender lens.
The study-unit introduces students to Social Policy and its theoretical frameworks. After giving the students a historical overview of the origins and development of social welfare regimes in Europe and Malta, the unit goes on to examine the links between gender and social policy to allow feminist critiques on the subject.

- Defining Social Policy
- Theoretical frameworks
- Industrialisation and the emergence of welfarism
- The development of Social Policies and Social Security in Malta.
- Gender and Social Policy
- Feminist Critiques of Social Policy

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

- Get a broad understanding of the term Social Policy and its implications
- Be aware of the main political frameworks upon which social policies are built
- Be conscious of the origins of Social Welfare Regimes after the industrialisation process
- Recognise the main developments of Social Policies and Social Security in Malta.
- Analyse social Policies through the gender lens
