DESCRIPTION The study-unit presents students with an introduction to a range of career guidance tools. It explores how career practitioners support individuals in understanding themselves, exploring opportunities, making informed decisions, and planning their careers through the use of structured instruments and resources. It examines both traditional and digital tools, highlighting their theoretical foundations, ethical considerations, and practical applications. The unit covers the following themes:

- Introduction to career guidance tools
- Types of career guidance tools
- Digital and AI-enhanced tools
- Evaluation and selection of tools
- Using tools in practice
- Emerging trends and future directions

Study-unit Aims

This study-unit introduces students to the use of tools in career guidance and counselling, enabling them to understand how such instruments support individuals in self-exploration, decision-making, and career planning. It aims to develop students’ ability to select, apply, and interpret both traditional and digital tools ethically and effectively, while critically evaluating their theoretical foundations, practical uses, and emerging developments such as AI-based applications.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the purpose and role of tools within the career guidance and counselling process;
- Describe the main categories of career guidance tools;
- Demonstrate understanding of key theoretical foundations that underpin the design and interpretation of tools;
- Discuss principles of test reliability, validity, standardisation, and ethical use in the selection of tools;
- Analyse how digitalisation and artificial intelligence are transforming career guidance tools and practice;
- Evaluate the ethical, cultural, and accessibility considerations involved in applying different tools across diverse client groups.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Select appropriate career guidance tools according to client needs and contextual factors;
- Administer, score, and interpret results from a range of career assessment and exploration tools;
- Integrate tool outcomes into career guidance and counselling practice;
- Critically evaluate and compare traditional, digital, and AI-enhanced tools for their validity, usability, and ethical soundness;
- Communicate assessment results and career information clearly and sensitively to clients;
- Reflect on their own professional use of career guidance tools.
