DESCRIPTION This study-unit will provide more depth to the study of management in the construction process. It will focus on:

(1) Factors affecting construction site organisation;
(2) Establishing construction methods and their planning control;
(3) Explanation of the legal requirements of site management.

Study-unit Aims:

The principal aim of the study-unit is to introduce students to the different processes on a building construction site of works. This aim will be achieved through the study of site management organisation and method statements. The ultimate aim is to provide students with a road map of the processes involved in translating designs to built structures utilising the different components of resources available on site including plant, labour, space and material. The students will be introduced to the implications of local legislation related to site management.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Understand the organisational and management issues surrounding a construction site;
Translate plans and specifications that define a construction project into a plan that is achievable on the site of works;
Assess the implications and consequences of a design proposal on the site of works.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Prepare a site management plan for a given construction project;
Assess site organisational details with respect to identified project and site characteristics;
Prepare method statements for use on a construction site;
Prepare a construction management plan to the standards required by regulations.
