CODE CPH5408

TITLE Clinical Management of Poisoning with Drugs of Abuse and in Sports

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will review forensic toxicology as pertaining to the signs and symptoms of poisoning with drugs of abuse including extensive discussion of amphetamines, cannabinoids, cocaine, ethanol, ethanol and alcohol withdrawal, hallucinogens, inhalants, opioids as well as other newer psychoactive substances relevant as per current patterns in local and foreign drug scene. It will also include an overview of the current management strategies of these drugs. There will also be overview of management of abuse by drugs in sports.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims are to:
- Appreciate the clinical, molecular and cellular phenomena in forensic toxicology subsequent to drug abuse;
- Review the symptoms related to the abuse of these substances;
- Appreciate the various management options in the context of specific groups of patients poisoned following the administration of drugs of abuse;
- Review prevention strategies, understanding the role of alcohol, drugs and poisons in causation of death forensic toxicology (e.g. drugs of abuse);
- Provide information of drugs included in World AntiDoping Agency List of Prohibited substances.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Review the fundamentals of forensic toxicology as pertaining to the signs and symptoms of poisoning with drugs of abuse;
- Outline the most common signs and symptoms following abuse with amphetamines, cannabinoids, cocaine, ethanol, ethanol and alcohol withdrawal, hallucinogens, inhalants, opioids as well as other newer psychoactive substances relevant as per current patterns in local and foreign drug scene;
- Evaluate current management strategies of these drugs and ergogenic aids in sports.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- To interpret the molecular and cellular basis of forensic toxicology in identifying signs and symptoms following abuse of these compounds;
- To plan management strategies in the treatment of drug abuse;
- To apply an analysis of forensic toxicology in treatment strategies;
- To predict patterns of illicit drug abuse in local and international scenario and in the ergogenic use of drugs in sports.
