| DESCRIPTION | Critical thinking enables individuals to make reasoned and informed decisions in a complex and information-rich world. Rather than accepting information at face value, critical thinking encourages students to question assumptions, recognise bias, evaluate evidence, and consider multiple perspectives when reaching conclusions and making decisions. This study-unit offers a variety of perspectives on critical thinking while outlining key theoretical components related to critical thinking. It helps students to develop transferable skills that are useful across different disciplines as well as in professional and everyday life. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit introduces students to the principles and practice of critical thinking providing a foundation for decision-making and problem-solving in academic, professional as well as everyday contexts. It focuses on developing the ability to analyse information objectively, to evaluate arguments, to identify assumptions and recognise biases, and to draw well-reasoned conclusions based on evidence. Students will explore key components of critical thinking, from both a practical and theoretical perspective. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing facts from opinions, assessing the credibility of sources, understanding ethical reasoning, and recognising common fallacies and cognitive biases that can distort thinking. Through guided activities and discussions, and a focus on critical reading and writing, students will be introduced to the application of critical thinking skills across disciplines. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Construct arguments and identify their components; - Define critical thinking and explain key conceptual elements; - Describe the role that ethical reasoning plays in critical thinking; - Demonstrate the relevance of critical thinking skills; - Understand and evaluate critical reading and writing. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply analytical and problem-solving critical thinking skills; - Apply logical reasoning to evaluate options and develop evidence-based solutions in decision making; - Understand how to construct arguments; - Describe the key components of critical thinking, both practical and theoretical. |
