DESCRIPTION The study-unit is divided into two main parts.

The first part covers career development. It examines the following topics: individual careers; organizational careers; career management interventions; and the future of career management.

The second part of the study-unit focuses on lifelong learning. It defines LLL and examines: the concepts of lifelong learning and adult education; formal, non-formal, informal learning practices; The origins and evolution of lifelong learning as a concept; Social movements as lifelong learning agencies; Globalisation & challenges to educators; Europeanisation & lifelong learning; Theories associated with LLL (Andragogy, Experiental Learning and the learning processes); Barriers to participation; The changing roles of educators.

Study-unit Aims:

The unit aims to introduce students to the current trends in career development and management within and outside organisations. Students also acquire the foundations of lifelong learning and the skills of guiding clients in their lifelong learning needs within the local and global contexts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand the way in which organisations and workers shape the workers' careers;
- Distinguish the impact of various career interventions that are carried out within organisations;
- Appreciate the complexities of the impact of globalisation on individual careers;
- Discuss the utility of lifelong learning by referring to major theories;
- Distinguish among formal, non-formal, informal learning practices;
- Comprehend the challenges to lifelong learning stemming from the processes of Europeanisation and globalisation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Assist clients who are confronted with career decisions at their places of work;
- Refer clients to the existing lifelong learning institutions in Malta;
- Guide clients in their formal, non-formal and informal learning needs.
