| DESCRIPTION | The purpose of this study-unit is to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to engage in longer stretches of spoken and written production, and to introduce them to the basics of presentations in English. It addresses some of the difficulties students often encounter when writing at length or presenting information orally during their studies at undergraduate level. It also aims to familiarise and equip them with the necessary tools to consolidate and improve their competence in writing and delivering presentations in English. For this purpose, the study-unit will give a lot of importance to students’ use of a process approach to writing and short presentations. Study-Unit Aims: - To consolidate students’ accuracy, appropriacy and fluency when engaging in writing and delivering short presentations; - To develop students’ knowledge and skills in relation to planning and producing written work or a short presentation; - To provide students with the necessary language tools for becoming autonomous learners, able to identify their linguistic weaknesses and analyse their own production independently. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - demonstrate an improved awareness of the accurate and appropriate use of a broad range of vocabulary; - demonstrate an improved awareness of the accurate use of a broad range of sentence structures varying in complexity; - identify a variety of text structures; - identify a variety of organisational strategies when engaging in writing; - discern the subtleties and effectiveness of punctuation in writing; - identify a set of signposts and their function in written and spoken production; - identify and correct errors in their own written and spoken production; - demonstrate an awareness of the stages in a process approach to writing and presentations; - identify main ideas and keywords in preparation for a short presentation; - identify a range of language structures discourse features that contribute towards greater speech fluency. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - use a broader range of vocabulary than that aimed at in ELP1010; - construct a broad range of sentence structures in writing; - choose a range of signposting appropriate to writing and speaking; - use discourse markers strategically and effectively in speaking; - organise a clear progression from point to point in their writing and short presentations; - analyse, evaluate and edit their writing; - punctuate accurately and effectively; - produce effective note-taking for a more focused purpose; - produce summaries and paraphrases demonstrating an improved quality; - write effective topic sentences and attempt to select appropriate supporting statements; - use appropriate speech patterns; - speak clearly and in a varied tone when delivering a short presentation; - use coherent structures in speech for effective communication; - deliver the content of a short presentation with confidence; - scale down content to a coherent piece when delivering a short presentation; - deliver a short presentation within a set time frame; - conduct further English language study independently.
