| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit aims to provide a detailed look at the evolution of the sonnet in English literary history, with particular emphasis on works from the Renaissance period and on the form’s generic traits. In our study of the genre of the sonnet we shall look at the development of the form from its first examples in thirteenth-century Sicily, to the sonnets of Renaissance Italy with particular reference to Petrarch, to the use of the form in France. This is followed by a review of the gradual adoption of the form in Britain in the sixteenth century, its return to popularity in the nineteenth century, and its use up to the present day. Although sonnets are all related in form, they have been used to address many different subjects, and this shift in focus will also be a focus for the study-unit. Reading List: Various critical essays will be assigned to students, although the main focus is on reading the sonnets themselves. The following is a useful reference text: Spiller, Michael R. G., The Development of the Sonnet: An Introduction (London: Routledge, 1992). |
