Study-Unit Description

CODE ENG1176

TITLE The Short Story

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT English

DESCRIPTION The study-unit considers aspects of the short story as a genre and reviews the historical development of the short story, providing also some points of comparison with the tradition of short fiction in other literatures.

There will be opportunities during the study-unit for seminar discussion of selected examples of the English short story. Students will then be allowed to write their assignment on the work of one particular exponent of the short story, on formal aspects of the genre, on one particular short story and the critical responses it has elicited, or on issues involving comparatism which might be raised by the short story form and its development. Authors discussed during the study-unit may include (but are not limited to) Charles Dickens, Maupassant, Henry James, Joseph Conrad, ‘Saki’, Elizabeth Bowen, Katherine Mansfield, V. S. Pritchett, William Trevor, and Raymond Carver.
