DESCRIPTION This study-unit seeks to introduce students to the themes and art of Shakespeare’s history plays.

This study-unit explores the interaction of tragic, comic, and political concerns in Shakespeare’s Richard II, Henry IV Parts I and II, and Henry V with a view to seeing whether a consistent political philosophy of history can be traced. The rights and duties of sovereign and subject, and current doctrines on authority and obedience, humour and venality are fully discussed.
