TITLE English in Context

LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course



DESCRIPTION The study-unit offers an introduction to the analysis of language in a variety of contexts as it aims to focus on systematic ways of paying attention to the various components of language. A number of contexts related to existing media are considered for the purpose of practising analysis in context. It will refer to the basics of pragmatics in use in order to introduce aspects of Text Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis relevant to English contexts.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:
- enable students to identify key features in different texts;
- introduce students to basic pragma-stylistics frameworks applicable to different contexts relevant to the modern world;
- introduce students to aspects of text linguistics and CDA (special reference to newspapers and interviews);
- provide students with the space to discuss and critique key aspects of media language;
- empower students with the ability to apply basic principles of pragmatics to analyse diverse styles in media texts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- describe the different components of the English Language;
- identify basic principles of pragmatics;
- identify the basic principles of text linguistics and CDA;
- demonstrate an ability to discern differences in registers;
- identify some of the ideological functions of media language.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- analyse and interpret critically a variety of written and spoken media texts;
- apply theoretical frameworks to newspapers and interviews based adapted from pragmatics, text linguistics and CDA;
- critique media texts in a structured and organised manner;
- select and apply appropriate style to different registers.
