DESCRIPTION This study-unit consists of a number of introductory lectures during which the principles of effective public speaking and presentation are explained, followed by a series of practical sessions during which the students deliver speeches to the class and take on other roles such as session chairs and speech evaluators.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to instill in the students, the fundamentals of effective speech preparation, organisation and delivery. This is done partly through theory and mainly through supervised and evaluated practical sessions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

Given a specific topic within her/his competence, the student will be able to plan and prepare an effective speech and presentation.

The student will identify the strengths and weaknesses of a given speech/presentation and assess it according to criteria learnt during the lectures; this will be done by students acting as evaluators of the speeches/presentations delivered by fellow students.

2. Skills:

Given a specific topic within his/her competence, the student will be able to organise the relevant material into an appropriate speech and presentation.

By the end of the study-unit, the student will be able to deliver this prepared speech/presentation in an effective and interesting way and chair a session during which speeches are being made. This will be done through the students acting as chairs of sessions in which their fellow students are delivering speeches/presentations.
