Study-Unit Description

Study-Unit Description

CODE EPC3103

TITLE Power Electronics 2

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Electrical Engineering

DESCRIPTION Objective:

The aim of this study-unit is to equip students with a clear understanding of inverter technologies, resonant converter systems, single phase high power factor rectifiers and controlled three phase rectifiers and considerations of power quality for modern power electronic applications. Students will gain theoretical knowledge and practical insight into converter operation, control techniques, harmonic effects, and their impact on system performance.

- Inverters

This section introduces single-phase and three-phase inverter configurations, focusing on both half-bridge and full-bridge topologies. Students will learn how inverters convert DC power into AC power suitable for residential, industrial, and grid applications. Emphasis will be placed on sinusoidal PWM techniques used to generate high-quality voltage waveforms. Additionally, the logic and control strategies behind PWM generation (carrier-based) will be discussed.

- Resonant Converters

This part explores resonant converter technologies designed to achieve high efficiency and reduced switching losses. Students will study the operation of switch-resonant circuits, which utilise controlled resonance to minimise switching stresses. Load-resonant converter types, including Series Resonant (SRSL) and Parallel Resonant (SRPL) converters, will be examined in detail.

- Power Quality

This section will introduce the influence of converter systems on power quality. Students will study harmonic generation in rectifier circuits and its effects on system performance and power factor. Special attention will be given to single phase high power rectifiers and three phase rectifiers used in high power industrial applications.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide students with advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of power electronic systems, with particular emphasis on inverter technologies, resonant converters, high-power rectifiers, and their impact on power quality and modern electrical networks.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain operation of inverter circuits: square-wave, quasi-square-wave and pulse-width modulated inverters and associated control logic;
- Understand ac output and dc link switching harmonics associated with inverter circuits;
- Understand motivation for resonant switching and resonant converter circuits;
- Explain operation of basic zero-voltage switching circuit and analyse SRSL and SRPL resonant converters;
- Explain harmonic and distortion effects of rectifier circuits.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Predict harmonic effects at ac output of inverter circuits and select suitable switching frequency and switching devices to reduce filter component sizes;
- Perform calculations related to resonant converters based on Fundamental Mode Approximation;
- Determine the control of high power factor rectifiers and calculation of the system parameters for high power three phase rectifiers.
