DESCRIPTION - Revision of RF electronics, Antennas, Transmission lines.

- Transmitters:
Amplitude(AM)/Frequency(FM)/Phase(PM) Modulators + Transmitters Architectures, topologies and performance considerations. Performance comparison.

- Receivers:
Amplitude(AM)/Frequency(FM)/Phase(PM) Demodulators + Receivers, Suppressed Carrier Modulation, Single Sideband Modulation, Superheterodyne Receivers,

- Digital variants of Transmitters & Receivers

- High Frequency Oscillators, The Synthesiser:
The basic concept of frequency synthesis. Implementation using the PLL.

- The Phase locked loop:
The Local Oscillator concept, The PLL concept, design and performance considerations. PLL circuits.

Laboratory work
- Construction and performance analysis of transmitters and receivers.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at giving students an understanding of radio electronic systems and the different components found within radio systems.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe and explain the operation of various radio transmitters and receivers.
- Compare the performance of various radio transmitters and receivers.
- Explain the principle of the Phase-Locked Loop.
- Describe frequency synthesis.
- Design a frequency synthesiser using a PLL.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to design and build radio transmitters and receivers.
