CODE EVD2504

TITLE Building Services

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Environmental Design

DESCRIPTION The study-unit will be organized as follows:

This study-unit is concerned with the mechanical and electrical systems required to provide the basic infrastructural services in buildings and to supplement the control of the internal environment. Three aspects of building services, are considered:

- Mechanical services including transportation systems, heat, cooling and ventilation systems, fire detection and sprinkler systems.
- Wired services including electricity power supply and distribution, data, and lightning protection.
- Piped services including cold and hot water supply, sanitary services and fittings, foul water and surface water drainage.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide:
- A basic understanding of the role of services in providing basic building infrastructure, such as potable water, electric power and telecommunications, as well as in controlling the environment within buildings;
- Sufficient understanding of the technical aspects of building services so as to enable students to communicate effectively with building services engineers in the design and installation of building services, and to be able to integrate such building services in the design of buildings;
- A sound basic knowledge of building services as a basis for further studies for those students who may wish to specialize in environmental control systems, their design and installation.

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Treat the provision of building services as an integral part of the design and construction of a building.
- Quantify units and comprehend the terminology of building services so as to be able to discuss technical issues with building services engineers.
- Indicate the requirements for the provision of building services within a proposed building.
- Understand the importance of proper design of building services in the design of a successful building, including its amenity value, health & comfort issues and energy efficiency, associated with such services installed.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Determine the building services requirements appropriate for the type of building considered.
- Evaluate the available technologies, and choose the appropriate systems for the building under consideration.
- Integrate the technical requirements of building services within the design of the building.
- Undertake basic calculations to be able to size plant, and the requirements of the building fabric.
