DESCRIPTION This study-unit first introduces law students to the French judicial system. Students will then familiarise themselves with French legal jargon (lexical items and syntactic structures) in a specific context, relating to criminal, civil, commercial law, etc. Lectures will be delivered in French. This study-unit will broaden the students' knowledge with regard to a legal system that has both similarities and differences to the Maltese legal system.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is:

- To assist students in understanding the French legal system, the French legal institutions - their composition and main functions;
- To familiarise students with the French legal jargon;
- To assist future lawyer linguists.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- understand and express himself in a specialized area, that is, French legal jargon;
- comprehend the basic elements of the French legal system;
- know which are the main legal institutions, what are their functions and how they are regulated.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- write in good French using proper legal terminology;
- translate a legal passage from English into French and from French into English;
- write about French legal institutions.
