DESCRIPTION This study-unit is an upper-intermediate course dedicated to the French language and French civilization. It combines grammar, vocabulary, speech acts and communication skills studied in real life situations and is designed for students who would like to express themselves in a wide range of situations. It targets the four language skills (Listening, speaking, reading and writing at B1+ level, thus enabling the student to bridge the B1 and B2 levels.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To improve reading and listening comprehension skills in French at B1+ level;
- To improve the students’ ability of spoken and written French at B1+ level;
- To increase the students’ vocabulary in French and to enhance and consolidate the use of more complex sentence structures;
- To improve an awareness of the main grammatical aspects of French;
- To create an awareness of complex topics of French civilization and culture;
- To enhance intercultural communicative competence.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify and explain the main points of French language input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
- Produce clear, connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Interact in French with a degree of fluency and spontaneity;
- Deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken;
- Describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions in French and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans;
- Understand and discuss topics on French media and socio-cultural themes.
