DESCRIPTION | This study-unit deals with research in stylistics, particularly literary genres, poetics and rhetorics (mainly Aristotle’s Poetics). It makes a comprehensive survey of the specificities of past and contemporary literary genres, including genres of ‘paraliteratures’. Each literary genre will be illustrated by a canonic example. Study-Unit Aims: - To introduce students to the importance of poetics (conventions of genres, or theories of form) in a stylistic analysis; - To present the main literary genres and their evolution through History; - To familiarise students with an analysis of discourse; - To develop students' ability to understand a literary text; - To present examples of literary genres. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Recognize the main literary genres of a given prose or poetic text and to formulate in detail its characteristics; - Describe the characteristics of an author’s style; - Identify a literary genre. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Carry out an in-depth semiotic analysis of a literary text; - Critically apply the theoretical knowledge learned in class to nonliterary discourse.
