DESCRIPTION In this study-unit, initially, different types of spoken exchanges between native speakers will be presented as models to emulate. The study-unit will allow students to interact by taking turns in exchanging speech for both phatic and transactional purposes. Students will also engage in monologue communication modes (presentations), leading to discussing with a public or as a member of the public. Speaking through different media will also be practised, by engaging in simulations of telephone exchanges as well as online and face-to-face meetings. Scripts of different transactional exchanges will also be enacted, such as in contexts of retail, services, catering and hosting. The study-unit is intended for speakers who have at least an overall B2+ level of competence in the French language.

Study-Unit Aims:

The objective of this study-unit is to allow students of French to practise the spoken component of the language. The study-unit’s aim is that students practice as wide a spectrum of topics, styles and genres, communicative aims and speech acts as possible, in a wide array of contexts. Thus, the study-unit will require students’ proactive participation as they engage in: (i) Spoken interaction for phatic functions; (2) Debating and discussing; (3) Presentation, and (iv) Special Employment Purposes. The study-unit will bring students to engage in ordinary conversation, presenting, mediating and defending a point, contradicting, persuading, conceding a point, reaching a compromise and other speech acts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify and apply utterance structure and grammar appropriate to spoken French;
- Recognize which level of language formality is required in specific communicative situations;
- Adapt their language style according to the level of formality marking specific situations of spoken exchange;
- Open, maintain and close conversational exchanges.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Engage in daily conversation with phatic functions;
