| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit consists of classroom-based lectures and presentations that focus on the nutrition and dietetic management of disease. Focus will be made on a patient-centered and a multidisciplinary team approach and will link to the practical placements the students will be attending. Study-Unit Aims: - The study-unit will provide the student with an opportunity to review key areas of dietetics and have an in-depth theoretical knowledge of how a dietitian assess, diagnose and treat dietary and nutritional problems at an individual and wider public-health level; - The study-unit will thus provide the student with a knowledge base which is highly relevant and applicable to effective evidence-based clinical practice. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Outline the process for nutrition and dietetic practice in both health and disease; - Describe the overall aims of dietary management and the underpinning evidence base; - Translate nutrition and dietetic guidelines appropriately to enable the empowerment of individuals and communities/groups to make informed choices; - Indicate the rationale for modification of energy and nutrient intake in both health and disease; - Identify the use of nutrient exchange systems in various clinical cases; - Summaries methods and use of nutritional support strategies including oral and artificial nutrition; - Review of different food for special medical purposes and their indications; - Discuss time management and case load planning in dietetics. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Determine appropriate dietetic interventions taking into account client needs and management of specific disease using the model and process of dietetics; - Criticize,integrate and apply knowledge and understanding of dietetics for the prevention and treatment of disease; - Demonstrate a personalized dietetic approach and population centred approach to enable shared decision making with the presenting person.
