DESCRIPTION This study-unit will look at various influencing factors of societal changes on law and how law is gendered and how gender influences law. It will look at the impact that law has on society and how the law can protect gender from discrimination or can be discriminatory within itself. Students will look at elements of violence against women, domestic violence and other offences that primarily affect women. Regard will be made to International and EU legislation as well as local and international jurisprudence.

Study-Unit Aims:

To make students aware of the position that gender and sex has in society and their access to fundamental human rights through various laws.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the range of feminist theories and other perspectives on law and their application to a range of subject areas;
- Discuss the relationship of law to gender, by looking into inequalities and differences between men and women, as well as the role has on gender;
- Become acquainted with various laws and judgements, both national and international, so as to have a better understanding of the impact that law has on gender.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Critically analyse and evaluate legislative reforms pertaining to gender;
- Utilize the key concepts learnt to participate in discussions;
- Become familiar with the concepts and theories learnt to be able to write and speak about them;
- Gain a broad understanding of conceptual and theoretical debates regarding the relationship between law and gender.
