| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit deals with the Human Geography of the Mediterranean. First the geography of the population and settlement patterns are discussed followed by the spread of agriculture, industries and the transport system networks. The contribution of walled towns to the cultural set-up of cities and islands around the Mediterranean Sea and the importance of the maritime industries conclude the unit. Study-Unit Aims: - Examine the role of migration and the sea within the ambit of population settlement; - Define the role of the changing economic structures; - Explain the importance of the maritime industry in the Mediterranean. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - place Malta and other islands within the context of the demographic variables of the Mediterranean; - link the terrestrial and maritime geographies through the transport network; - assess the importance and difficulties generated as a result of high population densities around the Mediterranean. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - distinguish between islands located in strategic waterways and others that are not; - differentiate between the dependence of localities on tourism and others whose employment structure is based on other services.
