DESCRIPTION | Patient safety and the prevention of healthcare associated infections are recognised as vital components of modern patient care. This unit will provide an overview of the fundamental principles of patient safety and their application in the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections. Study-unit Aims: This unit aims to provide participating students with essential information and fundamental principles on patient safety and their application in the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Be aware of the importance of infection prevention and control in providing a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors. • Have a better understanding of the basic principles of infection control and be able to apply standard precautions in relation to infection control. • Understand their role in the prevention of the spread of infection. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Apply patient safety and infection prevention principles. • Perform hand hygiene following the recommended technique and using the appropriate product. • Choose, put on and remove the correct personal protective equipment required for the task to be performed. • Apply standard precautions when caring for patients. • Understand the additional precautions required for patients on contact, droplet and airborne precautions. • Recognise current challenges in the development of antibiotic resistance.
