DESCRIPTION In this study-unit learners will be exposed to a broad range of lexis related to the humanities and social sciences in order for them to understand the denotation and connotation of individual lexical items and manipulate them effectively in written and oral communication.

Study-Unit Aims:

To present the main terminology of international relations, archaeology, history, geography, political science, philosophy, social studies, and critical theory in order to enable learners to extend their existing lexical base and manipulate lexis effectively and appropriately according to specific contexts and tasks.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- recognize different lexical items in their different forms.
- identify their use for denotational and connotational purposes.
- infer the impact that specific terminology has on the whole text.
- interpret the underlying meanings communicated through different use of lexical items.
- compare and contrast synonyms, antonyms, and their contribution to the construction of meaning in a text.
- use their existing knowledge to differentiate between word choice related to the text type concerned.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- organise different semantic fields in terms of morphological properties for appropriate use in written and spoken communication.
- structure specific text types using appropriate lexical items.
- integrate denotational and connotational levels of meaning into their written and spoken communication.
- critique the use of forms of lexical items in relation to formality and text type.
- construct written and spoken communications using a wide range of terminology in different forms.
