Study-Unit Description

CODE IFS0707

TITLE Principles of Experimental Chemistry

UM LEVEL 00 - Mod Pre-Tert, Foundation, Proficiency & DegreePlus

MQF LEVEL 4

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Science

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will serve as a basic introduction to experimental chemistry for students undertaking the certificate in Foundation Studies in Engineering and ICT (Chemistry).

In this study-unit, emphasis will be placed on basic techniques of experimental chemistry that are needed by students who wish to continue studying chemistry at undergraduate level or for students wishing to start an chemistry or medical biochemistry oriented career.

Its goal is to increase competency in analytical reasoning by developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills and to provide a foundation in experimental chemistry needed to start understand chemical processes.

Study-unit Aims:

To introduce students to general laboratory techniques
- Weighing
- Distillation, fractional distillation and steam distillation
- Volumetric analysis
- UV and IR measurements

To provide students with laboratory experience by conducting experiments
- Acid base titration
- Determination of the rate of reaction
- Qualitative analysis of some common ions
- Basic synthesis, isolation and/or purification techniques

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe how to collect data obtained from various experiments so as to reach appropriate conclusions.
- Explain how to calculate the yield obtained from synthesis experiment.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to work in a laboratory safely alone or as part of a group.
- Report and analyse results from scientific experiments in an accurate manner.
- Interpret data obtained from experiments in a logical manner.
