DESCRIPTION This study-unit requires the student to methodically address a research problem for which the aims and objectives are clearly defined in a research proposal. The student will be assigned a Principal Supervisor who will provide guidance on formulation of the proposal, offer support and ideas during the course of the student's work, provide advice and monitor progress as set out in the University's General Postgraduate Regulations.

The type of work produced, design, experiments, simulation, analysis and methodology will depend on the nature of the research and constitute a defined subset within the area of study under investigation. By the end of the prescribed study period, the student will submit an original dissertation of between 25,000 and 50,000 words on the research performed.

Study-unit Aims

The aims of this study-unit are for the student to perform advanced research on a topic from the general area of sustainable energy according to a pre-defined proposal using the relevant methodologies. In this manner, the student will apply and develop the required research, analytical and design skills together with the relevant theories that are required to address the task at hand. In addition to the application of such advanced research skills, the student will learn to manage resources, make informed decisions, define a research problem, formulate research proposals, communicate effectively and enhance his/her oral presentation and report-writing skills.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Address a research problem in sustainable energy in a structured and well-defined manner as demanded by the relevant research methodologies.
- Demonstrate an advanced superior knowledge and provide explanations on the specific problem domain captured by the research activity.
- Deliver learned contributions to the area under study.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe the scientific work performed in a written manner by means of technical reports, publications and a dissertation.
