DESCRIPTION This study-unit will been an introduction to two centuries of Italian literature from 1600 to 1789. We will follow the evolution of Italian literature thanks both to general lectures on history, culture and society and to the close readings of selected works. The main authors that will be presented are Galilei, Bruno, Marino, Vico, Alfieri and Goldoni. We will read excerpts from Carlo Goldoni's works, such as La locandiera and La bottega del caffè. We will reflect on the importance of theatre in the Italian and European society during the XVII and XVIII centuries, highlighting how the greatest authors of these times are authors of theatre, from Shakespeare to Moliere, from Calderon de la Barca to Goldoni. Additionally, we will analyze in depth two genres of Italian and European literature: the 'poema cavalleresco', which continues thanks to Marino and the novel. The last part of the study-unit will be dedicated to the Italian Enlightenment.
