| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit may be taken either alongside or independently of the unit “Storia della letteratura italiana: dal Cinquecento al Settecento”. While the companion unit offers a broad historical and contextual overview of Italian literary production between the sixteenth and the eighteenth century, this unit places the primary emphasis on the direct study of literary texts and on the development of advanced interpretative skills. The study-unit focuses on the close reading, analysis, and critical interpretation of key works and selected passages the works of Niccolò Machiavelli, Ludovico Ariosto, Torquato Tasso, Giovan Battista Marino, and Carlo Goldoni. Students will engage in detailed textual analysis, paying attention to language, style, genre, narrative structures, and rhetorical strategies, as well as to the ways in which these texts respond to and shape broader cultural, philosophical, and aesthetic debates of their time. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between literary form and meaning, and to the evolution of literary conventions across different periods and genres. By concentrating on the texts themselves, the unit offers students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of major authors and works already encountered in a historical survey, or to approach them independently through focused analytical practice. The study-unit is especially intended to strengthen students’ ability to read complex literary texts critically, to articulate informed interpretations, and to situate close textual analysis within an appropriate historical and cultural framework. In doing so, the course aims to foster a more nuanced and confident engagement with Italian literary heritage from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century.
