DESCRIPTION This Unit aims introduce students to Spanish and Latin American cultures by exploring its social and political history until the present. It will survey the development of national identity in Spain and in Latin-American states as well as the historical development of those nations and their distinctive cultures. This Unit will also discuss present-day Spanish society and the place of Spain in the world today. This historical approach will be complemented by an examination of Spanish and Latin American art across the centuries. The Unit will comprise the following sections.

- Spain before Spain: from Celtic Iberia to the Catholic Monarchs.
- The Spanish Empire.
- Colonial Latin America.
- Contemporary Spain.
- Spain and Latin America today.
- Spanish and Latin American Art.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:

- Describe and explain the key events in the histories of Spain and Latin America;
- Discuss the main features of Spanish and Latin American national identities;
- Analyse controversial historical and socials issues in Spanish and Latin American Studies;
- Evaluate the place of Spain in Western civilisation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss essential information from written sources related to Spanish and Latin America;
- Analyse events and social issues in Spain and Latin America;
- Summarise some of the controversial issues in present-day Spanish and Latin American societies.
