DESCRIPTION The Unit aims to provide students with an introduction to the history, geography and contemporary society of Spain and Latin America before looking at a variety of specific expressions of this reality, namely:
- An overview of Spanish art from the earliest times to the 18th Century, focusing on renowned artists such as El Greco, Ribera, Velázquez, Murillo and Goya;
- Appreciation and contextualisation of modern and contemporary artists from the late 19th Century to the present, including the works of Picasso, Dalí and Kahlo;
- Insights into Spanish and Latin American Music across time;
- An appreciation of Golden Age Theatre in Spain via the works of Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca and Tirso de Molina;
- A review of Spanish and Latin American film, focusing on the works of Buñuel, Pedro Almodóvar among others.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate some understanding of historical events and contemporary issues of Spain and Latin America;
- Appreciate works of art and their respective artists and different eras;
- Recognize the musical trends of Spain and Latin America, the main theatre trends of the Spanish Golden Age and Spanish and Latin American Film.

2. Skills:

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:
- Bring together essential information from written sources related to Spanish and Latin American;
- Analyze events and social issues in Spain and Latin America;
- Do short comparative Studies related to them discussed in the Unit.
