| DESCRIPTION | This Unit is based on a chronological exposition of the principal architectural achievements of the Maltese Islands, explained in their proper historical and cultural context. In this respect, illustrated lectures and site visits shall cover a timeline of over five thousand years of creative building activity which includes prehistory, Carthaginian and Roman times, the Medieval period, Renaissance and Baroque manifestations in Hospitaller Malta, 1530-1798, the period of British rule and the modern architecture of Malta, after independence. Explanations of the facts and controversies associated with the above-mentioned landmarks of architectural development in the light of the most recent research on the subject will enrich the core issues of this Unit. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to demonstrate a holistic knowledge of the multi-faceted issues concerning architectural expression in the Maltese Islands since Prehistoric times. The acquired knowledge of these issues should make him/her aware of the need to better understand, better appreciate and thus better promote the conservation of a rich legacy of architectural acheivements related to the timeline of historical events that constituted the roots of the Maltese Nation. 2. Skills: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to participate in the working of both National and International organisations that require the input of an overall non-specialist knowledge of the architectural history of the Maltese Islands. In this context, it is expected that the student will have acquired sufficient knowledge to facilitate his/her participation in multi-media debates directly or indirectly rconcerned with the the architectural history of Malta in its Mediterranean, European and world context.
