| DESCRIPTION | We will explore the literature of the Russian Composers in the vocal, symphonic and dance genres. We will discover the most important and influential works of the main Russian composers from Glinka to Prokofiev, and discover their lives form a light social and political point of view. This Unit will give the student the necessary knowledge to appreciate and familiarize themselves with the works of these composers, and they will be able to appreciate more in depth a symphonic, operatic or ballet performance. Case studies utilized for this Unit will consist of recordings of immortal productions from well-known conductors, directors and performers – together these will contribute to a more holistic approach for and by the students. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to: - Appreciate Russian classical music; - Learn how a composer can construct his composition; - Recall the general story, libretto or theme of some of the most important works; - Embark on the exploration and understanding of a symphony, opera and ballet. 2. Skills: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to: - Identify some of the most famous themes which the Russian composers used in their works; - Identify the most influential Russian composers, and how they lived; - Identify and acknowledge most of the important repertoire.
